Donor-advised funds (DAFs) are one of the most flexible and tax-efficient ways to support High Country News.
A DAF works like a charitable giving account: You make a contribution to your DAF sponsor, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to nonprofits like HCN over time. This allows you to be strategic and intentional in your philanthropy—supporting independent journalism when it matters most, while managing your charitable giving in a way that fits your financial goals.
DAFs are especially useful for donors who want to simplify their giving or maximize the impact of appreciated assets. If you’ve experienced a high-income year, sold a business, or simply want to avoid capital gains tax on long-held securities, contributing those assets to a donor-advised fund can unlock significant tax advantages. You can then use your DAF to make thoughtful gifts to HCN at any point during the year—no need to track paperwork from multiple donations or worry about year-end deadlines.
For many supporters, a donor-advised fund becomes a powerful tool for sustaining the work they care deeply about.
By scheduling recurring recommendations to HCN from your DAF, you help provide steady, reliable funding for independent reporting across the West—something our newsroom depends on. It’s also an easy way to involve family members in your giving traditions and to plan for long-term support of the causes you value. If you have questions or want to explore whether a DAF is right for you, please contact your charitable sponsor or reach out to us anytime. If you have additional questions or just want to connect, please reach out to us at fundraising@hcn.org
