PRESERVING OPEN SPACES
Colorado
Open Lands works to preserve large stretches of undeveloped land
across the state. So it’s only fitting that the nonprofit group’s
quarterly newsletter, which includes photos and descriptions of
recently completed projects, is laid out on big, airy pages. The
group’s projects, detailed in past issues of Landscape, include
acquisition of 1,610-acre Eagle Meadow Ranch in Eagle County, a
plan to preserve more than 800 acres outside of Denver through a
limited development scheme, and efforts to preserve 40 acres in
heavily developed West Vail. Now 13 years old, COL works for land
preservation by leveraging public and private resources,
negotiating land transactions and managing some of the donated land
and conservation easements. The nonprofit group helps compile
information for an annual survey, Colorado Land Trusts, which
profiles the state’s land trusts, and has also published how-to
booklets on conservation easements in Colorado. For more
