ALL ABOUT RIVER GUIDES

Members of Grand Canyon River Guides will gather in Fredonia, Ariz., Oct. 28-29, to share music, food and perspectives on their trade and the future of the Grand Canyon. Their publication, boatman’s quarterly review, chronicles the feisty group’s concerns, including opposition to the Park Service’s proposed requirement that guides wear plastic gloves and hairnets while serving meals during boat trips. A perennial issue is the fight for more river-sensitive management of Glen Canyon Dam. Guide Shane Murphy says it’s “no fair standing around camp doing nothing. Talk. Phone. Write. Think about carrying the fire.” To find out more about the 48-page boatman’s quarterly review, contact Grand Canyon River Guides at Box 1934, Flagstaff, AZ 86002 (520/773-1075).
