A VANISHING BREED

Roping the Wind: A Personal History of Cowboys and the Land is a eulogy on the life of the cowboy, written by Lyman Hafen, a fifth-generation Utahn and editor of St. George Magazine. Narrated in a down-to-earth style, the book takes a personal and nostalgic look at the cowboy’s vanishing legacy while exploring Western land-use issues from a rancher’s perspective. Hafen’s characters are people from the open range of his youth – from rodeo riders and leather-skinned homesteaders to the scowling Edward Abbey – all with their stubborn opinions and tough-as-steel ties to the land. Utah State University Press, Logan, UT 84322-7800. 150 pages, 1995. $19.95.
