LOGAN CANYON: ROUND 1,000
A
controversy that began in 1959 over widening and straightening the
road through scenic Logan Canyon in Utah continued in May when the
Forest Service decided against a citizens’ group. The group, the
Logan Canyon Coalition, had submitted an 187-page critique of the
state highway department’s plan to enlarge the road – a National
Scenic Byway – for a 27-mile stretch while straightening out some
30 curves. The coalition asked the Forest Service to require the
state to preserve the canyon’s rugged beauty by scaling down its
“road improvements,” from Logan to Bear Lake. Now that its appeal
has failed, the coalition is considering a lawsuit. For more
information, contact Logan Canyon Coalition members Gordon and
Nadene Steinhoff at 801/753-0497.
