Endangered act on tour

Members of the House Committee on (Natural) Resources, chaired by Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, will be in Vancouver, Wash., April 24 to discuss the reauthorization of the Endangered Species Act. Panels organized by Republicans will feature working people who have had their livelihoods affected by the law, says staffer Steve Hansen, while Democrat-selected panels will tout the law’s effectiveness. Those not invited to speak may submit written comments. Field hearings on the Act have been held elsewhere, and some environmentalists have characterized them as an anti-ESA tour. But Hansen insists that “nobody wants to abolish or gut the Endangered Species Act. We just want to make sure we do it right.” For more information, contact the Committee on (Natural) Resources at 202/225-7749.
