The mountains, for
many of us, are a source of inspiration, adventure, work and play.
But for a lot of the world, mountain life means extreme poverty and
a rapidly declining quality of life. A disproportionately high
number of the world’s hungry and chronically malnourished people
live in mountain regions. The United Nations has declared 2002 the
Year of the Mountains, hoping to bring attention to the problems
while celebrating the beauty of mountain living. One of the many
programs being offered worldwide will take place at the Mountain
Studies Institute, a research and education center in Silverton,
Colo., Sept. 26-28. Speakers include HCN‘s Ed
Marston, as well archaeologists, historians, conservationists and
local writers and photographers. Field trips will follow the talks,
touring the geology of nearby volcanic calderas and the Red
Mountain mining district. Visit www.mountainstudies.org or call
970/387-5161 for more information.
