Shopping smart just became a way to help
imperiled Northwest salmon. The new Chinook Book
is the region’s first salmon-friendly resource and coupon guide to
restaurants, recreation, food and household products. Created by
the Celilo Group, a Portland, Ore.-based environmental consulting
firm, the $18 book contains $5,000 worth of coupons for products
like soaker hoses, energy-efficient lightbulbs and organic food. It
also has tips for adopting salmon-friendly practices in the home,
garden and everyday life. According to Eric Loebel, director of the
book project, the Chinook Book received initial
support from the City of Portland, which was seeking ways to
educate people on how to reduce the impact of their day-to-day
activities on the environment. School and community groups
throughout the Northwest are using the coupons to fund raise, but
the Chinook Book is also for sale directly to
consumers in some local stores and on the Web. Loebel calls book
sales “hot” – already more than 3,500 copies have sold. The
120-page book can be ordered at www.chinookbook.net, or by calling
the Celilo Group at 503/226-7798.
