Women’s roles in the natural-resource professions
have changed significantly over the years, and Women in Natural
Resources journal has been there to document the progression.
Founded by a network of Forest Service women 20 years ago, the
approximately 40-page quarterly covers forestry, fisheries,
wildlife, range, recreation, soils and related environmental and
social sciences. The journal focuses on women’s accomplishments in
those fields, blending technical and policy information with
articles on gender issues in the workplace. Editor Dixie Ehrenreich
says she’s seen the journal evolve from a novelty item to an engine
for change.
“I thought it would be a nice and
easy way to get a few licks in for young women who were being
kicked around as they tried to advance,” she says. With women still
in the minority in many professions, WiNR provides a forum for
women to voice their concerns and showcase their
work.
