Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology can turn hard data into colorful maps and geographic databases, but few nonprofit groups can afford the expensive computer tool. The Conservation Technology Support Program wants to solve this problem by offering GIS grants to environmental groups. In the year 2000, the program will give away more than $1 million in software and equipment, donated by Environmental Systems Resource Institute, Clark Labs and Hewlett Packard. The grant package includes training and technical assistance. For more information, visit www.ctsp.org, or contact GreenInfo Network at 415/979-0343. You can also write to the network at 201 Mission St., 4th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94105. Grant applications are due Jan. 7, 2000.
