A CALM BOOK ON DIET, HEALTH AND THE
ENVIRONMENT
In the Impacts of Livestock
Production, Peter R. Cheeke writes about the animal rights
movement, antibiotics in livestock, competition between people and
domestic animals for grains, and the environmental aspects of
livestock production. He does it in a calm way, without demonizing
those who criticize the livestock industry. His approach is unusual
because he is professor of comparative nutrition at Oregon State
University, Corvallis, and his book is intended as a text for
agricultural students at land grant universities. Beyond imparting
information, Cheeke strives to lower the tone of the food debate
and help farmers and others to understand that the critics of our
food-production system raise legitimate, important questions.
