Dear HCN,
I was disturbed and
dismayed by your recent article about retired forest supervisor Jim
Nelson (HCN, 12/21/98). I have never met Mr. Nelson and know him
only by his reputation. I believe him to be a man of courage and
vision, with a land ethic fully the equal of that possessed by two
other remarkable forest supervisors, Orville Daniels and Tom
Kovalicky.
The Intermountain Region and the
Forest Service Chief have treated this man poorly, and on the
flimsiest of evidence. Gloria Flora, the new Toiyabe Supervisor,
will do her customarily great job, but it’s tough to see how the
Forest Service can afford to lose the incredible talents of a
leader like Nelson. He’s the kind of person who should be promoted
rather than abused.
