Dear HCN,
I regret to inform you
that the Turtle and Tortoise Liberation Front takes exception to
Mark Matthews’ report on “amphibian underpasses’ being considered
for the Flathead Reservation ostensibly to reduce the “hundreds of
painted turtles smashed” on Hwy. 93 (HCN, 11/23/98). Turtles, being
reptiles, go through no demeaning gill phase, nor do they cultivate
the ubiquitous mucosa so overdone by amphibs. Belonging to a wise
and tolerant class of vertebrates, however, the Front would accept
“herpetologic underpasses,” which would also provide relief to our
snake and lizard
brethren.
