California and Utah

Split on trapping

California voters said no to trapping, banning leghold traps in the state, 3,974,000 to 2,951,000. The debate pitted animal-rights groups and the Sierra Club against the Golden Gate Audubon Society and other groups that claimed trapping predators, such as foxes, is in some instances necessary for the recovery of endangered species such as the California clapper rail, a marsh bird.

Utah looked at the trapping issue differently, voting by a 56 percent margin to prohibit any citizens’ initiative that sought to restrict hunting, trapping or change any wildlife policy unless it received a two-thirds vote of approval.
