A new report by the Colorado Division of Wildlife
helps backyard birders care for what they’re watching. For
instance, cleaning feeders with soap and rinsing with a dilute
bleach solution followed by plain water can help prevent the spread
of diseases like avian pox and salmonellosis. And if you take a few
months off from filling the feeder, remember to taper off gradually
instead of stopping abruptly, keeping in mind that wild food is
most abundant in late summer and fall. For a copy of the winter
1997 issue of Colorado’s Wildlife Company, the Division’s
bird-feeding guide, write to Renée Herring, Colorado Division
