College students are invited to apply to the 1998
Southwest Earth Studies Program at Fort Lewis College in Durango,
Colo. The eight-week summer program, sponsored by the National
Science Foundation, is “a research program into the nature of
research itself,” using the problem of acid mine drainage in the
nearby San Juan Mountains to investigate the scientific,
philosophical and public policy issues surrounding environmental
research. Participants in the program will receive tuition, room
and board, and a weekly stipend. The application deadline is March
16. For more information, write to Robert Frodeman, Director,
Southwest Earth Studies Program, University of Tennessee, 615
