In the last few months, I think that you have increased the quality and timeliness of your articles. This latest cover story is proof in the pudding (“Sacrificial Land,” HCN, 4/15/13). Not only did Judith Lewis Mernit cover what is going on in the Mojave Desert — a complicated subject — but she also included the growing conflict within the conservation community between weaning America from its addiction to fossil fuels and protecting the Mojave.
As a retired National Park Service superintendent, I lived on the Mojave for several years. It was a totally alien world to me — debilitating summer temperatures and strange glorious scenery in early mornings and star shine: fierce and ethereal. I wonder: Where do we go from here?
