“Milk and Water Don’t Mix,” was wonderfully interesting (HCN, 11/28/11). I was especially impressed when writer Stephanie Paige Ogburn mentioned the origin of feedlot dairying by Dutch immigrants in southern L.A. County, its subsequent shift to Chino in San Bernardino County, and more recently to the Bakersfield area. I didn’t think many people who didn’t grow up in L.A. in the 1960s could possibly know about this sort of thing. I would have guessed the many Portuguese dairymen in the San Joaquin Valley would have begun feedlot dairying earlier. Thanks for doing such a fine and thorough job in exploring this important issue and its resolution in New Mexico.
